Description: Calibrachoa parviflora, commonly known as Seaside Petunia, is a trailing perennial herbaceous plant with small, petunia-like flowers. It typically grows to a height of 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) and spreads up to 24 inches (60 cm) wide. The foliage is dense, with small, ovate to lanceolate leaves, ranging from bright green to dark green in color. The flowers are trumpet-shaped, about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter, and come in various shades of pink, purple, blue, and white, often with yellow or contrasting throats.

Known Range: Calibrachoa parviflora is native to coastal regions of South America, including parts of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. It is commonly found along sandy shores, rocky cliffs, and dunes.

Care Requirements:

  • Light: Requires full sun to partial shade. It thrives in bright, indirect light.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly, especially during hot, dry periods.
  • Soil: Well-draining, sandy soil is ideal for Seaside Petunias. Amend heavy soils with organic matter to improve drainage.
  • Temperature: Prefers moderate temperatures between 60-80°F (15-27°C). Protect from frost.
  • Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer during the growing season to promote blooming.
  • Pruning: Trim back leggy stems and faded flowers regularly to encourage new growth and prolong flowering.
  • Pests and Diseases: Generally resistant to pests and diseases, but watch out for aphids, spider mites, and fungal issues in humid conditions. Treat as necessary with appropriate pesticides or fungicides.

Note: Calibrachoa parviflora is often cultivated as an ornamental plant in hanging baskets, containers, or as ground cover in coastal gardens due to its trailing habit and profusion of colorful blooms. It is known to attract pollinators such as butterflies and hummingbirds, adding to its ornamental value in the landscape.
