As I reflect on the question posed to me recently – “If your idea to clean up rivers with aquaponics is so promising, why aren’t you already implementing it?” – I find myself compelled to offer a sincere response. The truth is, there are several reasons why I am sharing this idea with the world rather than just embarking on it myself.
First and foremost, the urgency to address the issue of Dead Zones caused by pollution in our rivers outweighs any personal gain I might achieve. I genuinely believe that implementing aquaponics systems to clean up the nutrient pollution is our best shot at rectifying this environmental crisis.
However, the most significant obstacle I face is financial. I lack the resources required to bring this vision to life. Even a modest one-acre test site, with a budget of $500,000 to build out and operate for a year, is beyond my means.
Despite this financial setback, what I do possess is a passionate dedication to conservation, coupled with a creative mind honed through experience with aquariums and aquaponics, and inspired by permaculture principles. This backdrop and my love of nature compels me to share this idea with the world and seek support in any form it may come.
Consider the minimal cost it takes for me to create this website and share my vision. My hobbies revolve around exploring nature and photography, and my skills allow me to undertake much of this endeavor independently. Thus, the initial investment is negligible.
The potential upside is immense. With the support of backers who purchase my products and make donations, I could demonstrate the viability of my idea, potentially leading to substantial success and wealth. And with that success, I could tackle even more environmental challenges, further benefiting society.
Of course, there’s the possibility that my idea gains little traction, and I’m left with nothing but a website and a dream. Yet, even in this scenario, I take solace in knowing that I’ve contributed to a larger conversation about environmental stewardship. If someone else seizes upon my idea and achieves great success, I’ll find satisfaction in knowing that my goal – to improve our fisheries, clean our rivers, and uplift struggling communities – has been achieved, regardless of personal recognition.
In essence, by supporting the Cernunnos Foundation and its mission, you’re not just investing in a single idea; you’re investing in a vision for a better world. Together, we can make a tangible difference in our environment and communities. Join me in this endeavor, and let’s create a brighter future for generations to come.
