Description: Barbarea orthoceras, commonly known as American Yellow-Rocket, is a perennial herbaceous plant. It typically grows 30-80 cm tall, with erect, branching stems. The leaves are glossy, dark green, and pinnately lobed, with the basal leaves forming a rosette. The inflorescence is a raceme, consisting of numerous small, bright yellow flowers with four petals each. The flowering period usually occurs from late spring to early summer. The fruit is a slender, cylindrical silique containing small, dark brown seeds.

Known Range: American Yellow-Rocket is native to North America, with a distribution range that extends from Alaska and Canada southward to California and New Mexico. It is commonly found in moist, open habitats such as meadows, riverbanks, and roadsides, typically at elevations ranging from sea level to subalpine zones.

Care Requirements:

  • Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH.
  • Watering: Requires consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Avoid waterlogging.
  • Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 3-9, tolerating cold climates and frost.
  • Fertilization: Generally does not require fertilization, but can benefit from a light application of balanced fertilizer in poor soils.
  • Pruning: Deadhead spent flowers to encourage prolonged blooming and prevent self-seeding.
  • Propagation: Propagated by seeds; sow seeds in the fall or early spring. Can also be divided in early spring or fall.

Barbarea orthoceras is a low-maintenance plant suitable for naturalizing in gardens and wildflower meadows, providing bright yellow blooms and supporting pollinators like bees and butterflies.
