Description: Cattleya mendelii is a striking epiphytic orchid renowned for its large, fragrant, and vibrant flowers. The blooms typically feature a combination of white or pale pink petals and sepals with a contrasting lip that ranges from deep magenta to purple. Each flower spike usually bears two to three flowers, each measuring around 5 to 7 inches in diameter. The leaves are thick, leathery, and dark green, usually growing to about 8 to 12 inches long. This orchid is known for its robust and elegant appearance.

Known Range: Cattleya mendelii is native to the mountainous regions of Colombia. It thrives in the cloud forests at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 1,800 meters (approximately 3,900 to 5,900 feet) above sea level.

Care Requirements:

  • Light: Requires bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can cause leaf burn, so filtered light or partial shade is ideal.
  • Temperature: Prefers intermediate to warm temperatures, ideally between 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). Can tolerate slightly cooler or warmer conditions if necessary.
  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity environments, around 60-80%. Regular misting or a humidifier can help maintain adequate moisture levels.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the potting medium is nearly dry. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure good drainage. During the growing season, more frequent watering is needed compared to the dormant period.
  • Potting Medium: Best grown in a well-draining medium such as a mix of bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss. Repot every two to three years to refresh the medium and accommodate growth.
  • Fertilization: Use a balanced orchid fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season. Reduce fertilization frequency during the dormant period.
  • Air Circulation: Good air movement is essential to prevent fungal and bacterial infections. Ensure the growing area is well-ventilated.

By following these guidelines, Cattleya mendelii can thrive and produce its stunning flowers, adding beauty and fragrance to any collection.
