Description

Nemesia strumosa, commonly known as Cape-jewels, is a small, herbaceous annual plant. It typically grows to a height of 12 to 18 inches (30-45 cm) with a spread of about 6 to 12 inches (15-30 cm). The plant produces a profusion of vibrant, colorful flowers in shades of pink, red, orange, yellow, purple, and white. Each flower is about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter and has a distinctive two-lipped structure with a prominent lower lip. The foliage is green and lance-shaped, providing a lush backdrop to the striking blooms.

Known Range:

Nemesia strumosa is native to South Africa but has been widely cultivated and naturalized in other regions with suitable climates. It is commonly grown in gardens across Europe, North America, and Australia. In its native range, it thrives in the well-drained soils of the Cape Floristic Region.

Care Requirements:

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil. It can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils, as long as drainage is adequate.
  • Light: Full sun to partial shade. Best flowering occurs in full sun, but it appreciates some afternoon shade in hotter climates.
  • Water: Requires regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods. However, avoid waterlogging.
  • Temperature: Thrives in mild climates. It can be grown as an annual in temperate regions and may not survive frost.
  • Fertilizer: Benefit from a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer applied during the growing season to encourage continuous blooming.
  • Pruning: Deadhead spent flowers to promote new blooms and maintain a tidy appearance.
  • Propagation: Typically grown from seed. Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date or directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Germination usually occurs within 1-2 weeks under optimal conditions.

Additional Notes

Cape-jewels are ideal for adding a splash of color to garden beds, borders, and containers. Their bright and cheerful blooms make them a popular choice for gardeners seeking to create vibrant, eye-catching displays.
