Description

  • Growth Habit: Epiphytic orchid with long, pendulous canes that often grow up to several feet in length. Typically leafless when in bloom.
  • Size: Canes grow between 3 to 6 feet in length; flowers are around 3-4 inches across.
  • Leaves: Long, narrow, and deciduous; leaves are shed before the blooming period.
  • Flowers: Large, showy, and usually pink or lavender; although called “unscented,” some varieties have a light fragrance. Blooms appear directly on the bare canes in late winter or early spring.

Known Range

  • Native Range: Found throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam.
  • Cultivated Range: Widely grown in tropical and subtropical regions; can also be cultivated in greenhouses in temperate areas.

Care Requirements

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light with some direct sunlight; needs filtered sun when grown outdoors.
  • Watering: Requires regular watering during the growing season; reduce watering in winter when the plant goes dormant and canes are leafless.
  • Soil: Grows best in a well-draining orchid mix or mounted on bark or wood for better airflow to the roots.
  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (60-80%) but can adapt to lower humidity with adequate watering.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 70-85°F during the day and 55-65°F at night. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 50°F.
  • Propagation: Propagated primarily through keikis (baby plants that grow on the canes) or by division of mature plants.
  • Common Pests/Diseases: Susceptible to common orchid pests like aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites; fungal and bacterial infections can occur with poor air circulation or overwatering.

Additional Notes

Maintenance Level: Moderate; requires specific seasonal watering and light adjustments but is resilient in favorable conditions.ronments where humidity and temperature can be controlled

Special Features: Often cultivated for its beautiful, pendulous blooms, which create a striking display when in full flower. Known to be relatively easy to care for among orchid species.
