Description: Hydrangea serrata, commonly known as Tea of Heaven or Mountain Hydrangea, is a deciduous shrub known for its delicate and lacecap-like flower clusters. The leaves are serrated, giving the species its name “serrata.” These shrubs typically reach a height of 3 to 6 feet and spread equally wide. The flowers vary in color from blue to pink, depending on soil pH, with shades of purple and white also common. The lacecap flowers consist of small, fertile flowers surrounded by larger, showy sterile flowers, giving them a unique and attractive appearance. The foliage is lush green during the growing season, turning shades of red, orange, and yellow in the fall, adding to its ornamental value.

Known Range: Hydrangea serrata is native to East Asia, particularly Japan and Korea, where it can be found in mountainous regions and forests. It is also cultivated and appreciated in gardens and landscapes worldwide, especially in temperate climates.

Care Requirements:

  • Location: Plant in a location with partial shade to full sun, preferably with morning sun and afternoon shade, especially in hot climates.
  • Soil: Well-draining, fertile soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Acidic soil promotes blue flower color, while alkaline soil encourages pink flowers.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the growing season. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain moisture.
  • Pruning: Prune after flowering to remove dead or weak wood and shape the plant. Avoid heavy pruning, as it may reduce flowering the following year.
  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring before new growth begins, and optionally feed again in midsummer.
  • Pests and Diseases: Monitor for pests like aphids and spider mites, and treat as necessary. Prevent fungal diseases by ensuring good air circulation around the plant and avoiding overhead watering.

Hydrangea serrata, with its exquisite flowers and manageable size, is an excellent choice for garden borders, woodland gardens, and mixed shrub borders, adding beauty and charm to any landscape.
