Description:
Lantana camara is a perennial flowering plant known for its clusters of small, brightly colored flowers and aromatic foliage. It typically grows as a shrub, reaching heights of 1 to 2 meters, though some cultivars may be smaller. The leaves are rough-textured and serrated, with a strong scent when crushed. Flowers are small and tubular, arranged in dense clusters called umbels, and come in a variety of colors including red, yellow, orange, pink, and white. Fruits are small, round, and black when ripe.
Known Range:
Lantana camara is native to tropical regions of the Americas but has become naturalized in many other parts of the world due to its ornamental value and hardiness. It can be found in subtropical and tropical climates worldwide, including Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands. It thrives in warm, sunny conditions and is often found in disturbed areas such as roadsides, pastures, and forest edges.
Care Requirements:
Light:Lantana camara thrives in full sun and requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
Soil: It prefers well-draining soil with moderate fertility. It can tolerate a wide range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, or clay soils.
Water: Once established, Lantana camara is drought-tolerant and only requires occasional watering during dry periods. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it’s best to let the soil dry out between waterings.
Pruning: Regular pruning helps maintain a compact shape and encourages continuous blooming. Remove spent flowers to promote new growth and prevent self-seeding, as Lantana camara can be invasive in some regions.
Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring to promote healthy growth and flowering, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Pests and Diseases:Lantana camara is relatively pest and disease resistant but may occasionally be affected by aphids, spider mites, or powdery mildew. Monitor plants regularly and treat any infestations promptly.
